The Princesshay Big Dig
The Big Dig in Princesshay has been the largest archaeological excavation ever to occur in this area of the city centre.
The team from Exeter Archaeology were on site in Princesshay for 9 months, between Summer 2005 and March 2006, during which
time they uncovered some interesting artefacts from the city´s past that will provide them with some useful information about
Exeter's fascinating history.
Following thorough investigations of the site, the artefacts are being studied and recorded by Exeter Archaeology and a series
of reports will be produced to describe the results of the excavation. The finds will then be taken to the Museum and archived.
Exeter Archaeology Propject Manager Peter Stead explains the significance of this exciting excavation:
"The Princesshay dig has been one of the largest urban excavations ever undertaken in the South-West. There have in the past
been very few opportunities to investigate this part of Exeter and these excavations have provided archaeologists with a lot
of important new information about the early layout, use and development of this part of the city, particularly during Roman
and early Medieval times".
