PRINCESSHAY NAMED AS EUROPE’S TOP MEDIUM SIZED SHOPPING CENTRE
Date: 23 Apr 2008
The Princesshay scheme in Exeter, delivered by Land Securities, has won a prestigious ICSC (International Council for Shopping Centres) award, having been named as the most outstanding medium sized shopping centre in Europe. The retail-led mixed use development provides 400,000 sq ft of prime retail and 130,000 sq ft of much sought after residential apartments.
For the past 30 years the ICSC Awards, recognised as the most prestigious in the field of European retail property, have acknowledged
the most outstanding new and refurbished shopping centres in Europe. Princesshay, the only UK shopping centre short listed
as a finalist, impressed judges in a number of areas including, its attractive architecture, distinctive mix of national and
independent tenants such as LK Bennett, Karen Millen, Reiss, AH Moda and Orange Tree and its ability to deliver long term
economic, environmental and social benefits to Exeter’s residential and business communities.
In addition to this latest award success, Princesshay today launches a brand new and exciting TV campaign. The original and
creative ‘any excuse’ campaign, due to appear on ITV Westcountry, features actors as Princesshay shoppers making their excuses
to return to the unique shopping quarter at every opportunity. The stylish and witty commercial, directed by Stephanie Chappell
launches on air today and will run until Saturday May 10th.
Nick Davis, Development Director, Land Securities comments, “The ICSC Awards represent the best of the best in the retail
industry across Europe and we are delighted that Princesshay has been recognised as a leading example of mixed use development.
Working in close partnership with Exeter City Council, we have delivered a scheme which promotes permeability and integration
within the existing urban grain”
Nick Davis continues, “The ICSC Award adds to the several awards Princesshay has won since opening last year, including the
BCSC Gold Award, and provides further evidence of Land Securities’ expertise in delivering contemporary retail-led urban regeneration
schemes.”
Working in partnership with Exeter City Council, Princesshay’s £225 million investment represents the biggest single investment in regeneration within Exeter’s history and has further strengthened the city’s status as the region’s capital.
The main focal point of the scheme is the new European-styled Princesshay Square, home to a striking pavilion building and
featuring innovative, contemporary public art that complements the sweeping views of Exeter’s historic cathedral. The large,
vibrant square piazza has become the City’s new destination for socialising with eateries including La Tasca, Strada and Café
Rouge.
Cllr Pete Edwards, Leader said, “We are very pleased that Princesshay has been recognised at European level for the very high
quality of its design and content. This award is important in highlighting the City’s profile and it’s also good that the
work of the whole professional team has been rewarded.”
