Princesshay wins two BCSC Gold awards

Date: 6 Dec 2007

Princesshay, the hugely popular new shopping quarter in the heart of Exeter, developed by Land Securities in partnership with Exeter City Council, has won retail property organisation BCSC’s Supreme Gold award for 2007.

Princesshay received the highest accolade among the eight winners of BCSC Gold awards across all categories. These exclusive retail property industry awards recognise outstanding retail developments, retailers, income-generating projects and public partnerships in the UK and Ireland. As well as receiving the prestigious supreme gold award, Princesshay also picked up the award for In-town Retail Scheme for 2007.

Sally Henley, Princesshay Manager says,'Land Securities is delighted in the face of some very stiff competition, to be the recipient of not one but 2 major awards. The BCSC Golds are leading accolades within the shopping centre and retail destination industry and the team at Princesshay are thrilled that Exeter's elegant and innovative scheme has been recognised with these coveted awards.'

The BCSC Gold awards programme has been running for 23 years and is designed to reward excellence in retail-led developments and recognise projects that generate improvements in the quality of the build environment. The awards also reward stores and operations within that environment. A supreme Gold Award category was created to recognise those achievements that have moved the industry forward the most.

John Rigby, Director of Economy and Development, Exeter City Council says,

“It’s fantastic that Princesshay has received national recognition for excellence from the leading organisation within the retail industry.    The award confirms that well designed, mixed use schemes are the way forward.  This award also endorses the great working relationship between Exeter City Council and Land Securities.”

The judges of the BCSC Gold awards offered the following comment on Princesshay.

“Princesshay is an elegant example of a retail-led mixed-use development, following the new urban agenda of ‘streets and squares’. The scheme has delivered some 400,000 sq ft of retailing and catering in a well-thought tenant mix plan, reflecting the ancient history of the site. Sitting above the retail are over 120 apartments, adding to the vibrancy of Exeter.”
