Children’s artwork unveiled at the former Debenham
Date: 28 Jan 2008
Pupils at a local school in Exeter have designed pictures to feature on hoardings that surround the former Debenhams’ building in Exeter, owned by property developer Land Securities.
Year 6 students at local primary school, St Sidwell’s, were asked by Princesshay developer, Land Securities, to produce a painting or drawing on the theme of ‘What Exeter means to me….’. The collection of images will be unveiled to the public at the former Debenhams’ site in Exeter on Wednesday 30th January 2008 at 2pm.
The children were inspired by famous Exeter landmarks including Exeter Cathedral, Exeter Castle, The River Exe and Exeter Quay.
Hayley Dymond, Year 6 Class Teacher at St Sidwell’s Primary School said, “We were very pleased to asked by Land Securities to create artwork to be displayed at the former Debenhams’ site in the city centre. The children were very excited about the project and have created some beautiful pictures and paintings of recognizable landmarks in our city.”
Last year, Land Securities invited St Sidwell’s Primary School to participate in a time capsule project for Princesshay. Children at the school collected iconic 21st century items for a time capsule, which has been buried beneath the new retail and residential development.
Emma McLeod, Princesshay Marketing Manager, “It has been great to work with the pupils at St Sidwell’s. As the school is located just a couple of streets away from the Debenhams’ site, we thought it would be a nice idea for the pupils to decorate the hoardings with their own artwork. We asked the children to choose a local landmark or city setting that sums up what Exeter means to them and produce a drawing or painting of the location.”
Emma continues, “We are absolutely delighted with the drawings and paintings the children have created. They have captured the details and character of the buildings perfectly and the finished artwork looks fantastic. We are grateful to Miss Dymond and her class for their hard work and we are delighted that these colourful interpretations of famous Exeter’s locations will be unveiled today for everyone to view and enjoy.”
The Land Securities Group is made up of three core businesses: Retail, London Portfolio and Land Securities Trillium (property partnership), plus a growing team dedicated to Urban Community Development. The scale and vision of their operations makes Land Securities a major force in the shaping of the British landscape.
